Sound Check

Chesterton performing at The Underground, Hanley

Sound Check provides after school workshops where 11 – 18 year olds can learn to play an instrument, improve existing skills, and perform with others, working alongside experienced musicians in a safe, community environment. The programme is aimed at areas of social and economic disadvantage as well as rural isolation.

Features:

  • Sound Check runs weekly across term-time after school and also supplies holiday provision.
  • All workshops will be led by experienced music leaders and will be equipped with a kit of instruments and professional technical equipment.
  • The programme is all inclusive, regardless of which school a young person attends or their ability level.
  • A large number of centres are taking part, some up until 2011. Current Sound Check Centres are Bentilee, Cheadle, Chesterton, Rugeley, Leek, Kinver & Swindon and Rocester & Wombourne.

Benefits:

  • Our music workshops bring young people together, develop partnerships & explore interests.
  • Performance opportunities at professional venues across the West Midlands.
  • With guidance from experienced music leaders, the young people involved can learn a variety of musical skills, from song writing to live performance.
  • Several bands have already emerged through Sound Check and have played at The Underground in Hanley, Cheadle Festival, The Gatehouse in Stafford, Victoria Hall in Hanley and The Brewhouse in Burton.
"Even rival schools have been playing together and bands are
now giving peer support to newcomers”
Dawn Forrester – Community and Learning Partnership Coordinator for Cheadle & Westwood.
